Point Roberts provides a unique and beautiful opportunity for horse lovers. The original Icelandic settlers of Point Roberts brought their beloved Icelandic horses with them and the tradition of Icelandic horses continues even today as it remains a common breed. Of the approximately 60 horses that are lucky enough to call Point Roberts home, about one third are the small, gentile and sturdy Icelandic horse.
Horseback riding in Point Roberts can be characterized in two words – lovely and peaceful. The unique geography of the Point offers incredible year round riding opportunities that boast; stunning ocean vistas, spectacular beaches, forested trails and safe roads. Horses are often seen trotting down the road, at Lily Point and in herds grazing the lush pastures.
There currently are no horse rental outfits serving the public, however there are a variety of horse boarding options available and there is a Horseman’s Association.
If I bring my horse, can it thrive in Point Roberts?
We have farriers, barefoot trimmers, massage therapists and veterinarians that service Point Roberts regularly. It is important to know that bringing your horse here requires some special steps that must be pre-arranged prior to arrival at the border.
Horses are required to have a veterinary certificate of health and Coggins testing; and if the horse is moving permanently from Canada there is an importation process to make things official. Yes, many of our horses are dual citizens!
